My favorite "room" this time of year...

Aaron and I got to work on the patio this weekend. It has been weeded, swept, and power washed.....then we put the canopy on the pergola and got out the furniture!

Mainstays Crossman Conversation Set from Wal-Mart

Pergola with canopy
As much as I love the pergola, it's staying with the house. It was a nightmare to assemble, so we're not going to want to take it down, move it to a new house, and put it back up.

Mainstays Crossman bistro set from Wal-Mart
I love this little bistro set. It's the perfect size for two people, but we'd like something larger as our family grows. They make a large dining table (for 6) that matches this set, but I can't find it! I've sent Wal-Mart a pathetic e-mail, convinced they still have a set in a warehouse SOMEWHERE and asking if they would sell it to me.

Farley and Pepper. Not included with house.

More posts to come soon! We're rapidly checking projects off our list, and I'll be sure to take pictures of it all! We're planning to have our house on the market in mid-June.

Kitchen DONE!

I painted the bulkhead in my kitchen, so this room is DONE!

20 Wedding Day Memories

Copied from my friend Krystal...

1. When was your wedding day?

May 14, 2011

2. What day of the week was it?

Saturday

3. Did you get married in a church?

No. We got married by a Judge under a pavilion on the grounds of a local winery.

4. How many people were in your wedding party?

3 Bridesmaids, 3 Groomsmen, and 3 Ushers

Oh, and the cutest ring bearer ever, my darling nephew Drew.

5. Where was your reception?

Our reception was in the loft of a 100 year old barn on the grounds of the winery.

6. How many guests were invited to your wedding?

Umm.....I can't remember! I do know that about 130 people came.

7. How long did you wait to tie the knot after your proposal?

About 6 months. But we had set a date and booked the winery before our engagement was official.

8. Who did you hire as your photographer & videographer?

Grrrr.....I hired Jonathan Kirshner of Lovelight Photography. His work was good, but he took 4 months to get me the pictures, even though he told me 2 weeks! I sent e-mail after e-mail and even had my bosses (lawyers) write a letter. He didn't respond until I facebook stalked him!

We decided not to hire a videographer. I've heard that most couples who don't hire one will regret it; but neither of us thinks we missed out.

9. Did you have a DJ or a band?

We had a DJ; the Springfield area isn't known for having a good selection of bands to hire for weddings, so we didn't even consider it.

10. Did your father walk you down the aisle?

Yes he did.

11. What color were the bridesmaid dresses & groomsmen vests?

The bridesmaids' dresses were "watermelon," and the tux vests were "buttercream." We brought it all together with a mix of pink, yellow, and white flowers.

12. Who was your Maid Of Honor/Best Man?

We each had two. My maid of honor was my sister, Malia.

My matron of honor was my best friend Alicia.

Aaron's best men were his friend and brother-in-law Tom, and his best friend Dave.

13. If you could change one thing, what would it have been?

The weather!

May in Illinois is risky for an outdoor wedding, but we were so hopeful! The week of the wedding was beautiful; 80s and sunny! The night before the wedding, a cold front came through, bringing storms and chilly temperatures. It was pouring down rain and about 50 degrees the whole day.

This picture pretty much sums it up.

The grounds of the winery are really very pretty. Our plans for the ceremony were something like this:

And the reception was supposed to be more like this:

14. What type of limo did you get?

None! The ceremony and reception were in the same place, and we decided we could drive to the hotel ourselves at the end of the night. It turned out that Aaron and I both drove our cars to the winery, so we each drove a car back that night. Kind of silly, me trying to squish myself into my tiny car AND use the steering wheel in that big dress. We should have thought that through!

15. What type of wedding gown/tux did you two wear?

I wore a Mori Lee gown, strapless with a sweetheart neckline, side ruching, and an asymmetrical waterfall skirt. It had a corset back, so I had to hold myself in while my sister and Alicia closed me up!

Can't. Breathe.

As far as Aaron's attire....um....he wore a tux. I was really uninvolved in the selection of the tuxes; I wanted him to pick whatever made him happy! But of course, he had to do this:

16. How was the weather?

As my dad put it, the frogs in the pond were building an ark.

17. Where did you go on your Honeymoon?

Jamaica. The weather was much better there.

18. What was your favorite part of your wedding day?

This:

19. How long have you been married?

11 months, 2 weeks, and 4 days.

20. What are the best pieces of marital advice you have to offer?

Say I love you all the time.

Laugh as much as possible, even when things aren't going right.

Be considerate of each other in every way you can.

Kitchen Blog

I haven't written in a while, so I thought I should post some pictures of what we've done to our kitchen!

I didn't take "before" pictures, but luckily I have some photos I took before I bought the house, when it still belonged to Cindy and Nate.

New refrigerator

New stove
The biggest change we made was replacing the appliances. We wanted stainless steel, and were able to get great deals on the refrigerator and dishwasher (the "dents & dings" aisle at Lowe's is great, and not everything is actually dented or dinged!). The stove was a bit more challenging; you may have noticed it's really teeny! It's 24 inches wide; standard is 30 inches. So the stove had to be special ordered.

We also painted the cabinet hardware to update the look of the kitchen.

We are planning to paint this room before we put the house on the market. The bulkhead is currently a royal blue (Cubs blue), so we'd like to pick something a little more subtle (and buyer friendly). Other than painting, this room is DONE and ready!

We're gonna need a bigger blog...

So....Aaron and I are trying to buy a new house! It's a foreclosure, it needs work, but we're so excited about it!

It's not a done deal yet....we have several hoops to jump through before it's ours; this will not be a traditional home purchase/mortgage by any means. Everyone keep your fingers crossed!

In the meantime, we have a house that we need to SELL! Over the next couple of weeks, we're going to be working as quickly as we can to stage our current home and get it on the market.

So there will be lots of new pictures, and staging ideas/strategies....be sure to post in the comments any ideas you have!

The Coolest Room in the House

I wanted to do another post and tell everyone about our awesome bedroom.

Our house has a finished attic. The space is about 10' by 30'...very roomy! We've been using it as our master bedroom. Sometime before we have any babies, we'll be moving to a bedroom downstairs. I'll miss sleeping up here!

Our bedding. Hotel Collection from Macy's:

From left to right: wall mounted space heater (the attic can get quite chilly in the winter; wall mount is GREAT so the puppy won't burn his curious little nose), new TV from Santa, wedding picture on canvas (Christmas gift from Aaron's sister and brother-in-law)

Little dressing corner and closet:

It will be more practical to live downstairs when we have a little one. I'll miss the space, but going up and down the stairs several times a night doesn't sound like fun!

Our plans for this room:

- convert space into guest room/office
- add a three quarters bath and additional closet space
- remove the half-wall surrounding the stairs, and replace with a railing/spindles
First blog post!

My friend Krystal (see The Favor of God) has been blogging for some time, and encouraged me to do so, too.

So what am I going to blog about? Krystal suggested the home improvements my husband and I have been working on. We live in an older house that needs some updating. We've been doing small projects for some time now, but we're hoping to complete some big things, like putting in our new kitchen and finishing the basement.

To get started, I'll post before and after pictures of our dining room. We did this a while ago, but I want to share them anyway!

Dining room before:

I painted it red shortly before my husband and I started dating. I wanted something bold and fun. But I grew tired of it. Also note the chandelier. It came with the house, and I wanted something a little more modern.

Dining room after:

And another view:

The beautiful color is Sherwin Williams beach house. We painted our guest room this color too, and it's the happiest tan we've ever seen!

The chandelier is an oil-rubbed bronze finish. We've since replaced several other light fixtures to coordinate.
